RODA Saddle woven outdoor dining armchair

RODA Saddle is a single chair, and a carefully resolved one. Gordon Guillaumier gave this dining armchair a horseshoe curve that runs from the seat straight into the arms, then wrapped the back in hand-woven cord. The frame is aluminum in smoke or milk. It joins the RODA outdoor furniture range as a compact armchair for a garden or terrace table.

Woven dining armchair

Shaped like a horseshoe

From above, the outline of Saddle is a horseshoe. The curve that holds the seat keeps going and becomes the arms, so the chair reads as one body with no break at the corners. Behind it, a dense weave of 3 millimeter cord covers the back completely and hides the frame inside. The result looks soft, closer to a basket than to a metal chair, while the structure underneath stays rigid.

The frame is powder coated aluminum, and since aluminum does not rust, Saddle can stay out through summer storms and salty coastal air. The cord is polyester or acrylic, in eight colors from sand to sky, plus five recycled tones including clay, mint and teal. Seat and back cushions use hydro-draining padding that lets rain pass through, and there are fifteen cushion fabrics to choose from.

Guillaumier sized the chair to slide fully under RODA tables. It is about 23 5/8 inches wide with arms at 25 5/8 inches, so it tucks away after dinner and keeps a walkway clear on a narrow terrace. The seat is about 17 3/4 inches high with its cushion, an ordinary dining height, while the arms and the enclosing back give some of the support of a lounge chair.

Saddle works with the long teak and aluminum dining tables in the RODA range, Pier and Plein Air among them. Around a single table, six or eight of them turn the woven backs into the main pattern of the scene. Made in Italy, each chair is ordered with its own frame and cord colors, so a set can match exactly or mix two or more tones.
