RODA Spinnaker extendable teak outdoor dining table
RODA Spinnaker is an extendable dining table by Gordon Guillaumier. Closed, it is about 82 inches long. Opened, it grows to roughly 132 inches and seats up to twelve people. The top is slatted teak and the legs are powder coated stainless steel. For hosts whose guest list changes at the last minute, it is a practical pick from the RODA furniture catalog.
Extendable dining table
A top that slides open
The extra length is built into the table. Slide the slatted top along its guides and a hinged leaf tips up to fill the opening. Nothing has to be carried out from a garage when more guests arrive, and nothing needs storing once they leave. Closed, the table seats a family dinner in comfort. Open, it stretches to about 131 7/8 inches, enough for a long lunch with friends.
Guillaumier played the weight of teak against a light, continuous steel line. The legs are powder coated stainless steel in smoke, milk or rust, bent into a geometric frame with no break in it. Stainless steel resists corrosion, and the powder coat adds a second barrier against rain and salt air. Water runs off between the slats, and teak left untreated turns silver gray over a few seasons.
The table is about 40 1/8 inches deep and 29 1/8 inches high, with roughly 74 1/2 inches between the legs and 26 inches of clearance under the top. That leaves open sides for chairs at the closed length. When planning the space, measure for the open length and add room at both ends so the chairs there can pull back.
A spinnaker is the large sail a boat raises when running before the wind, and the name suits a table that swells when needed. It is Italian outdoor furniture for households that entertain at changing scale. Pair it with Saddle armchairs by the same designer, or with stackable aluminum chairs, and keep a few in reserve for the evenings the table opens.
