Each sofa size comes in two versions. On the 001, 002 and 003, the back is wound with 7 millimeter cord in polyester or acrylic, in thirteen colors counting recycled clay, mint and rose. On the 201, 202 and 203, the back becomes a row of padded tubular belts, quieter to look at and softer to lean on, offered in gray-sand, gray-blue or recycled clay and stone.

Both versions sit on a powder coated stainless steel frame in smoke, milk or rust. Stainless steel stands up to damp and to salt air, and the coating seals it further. The cords and belts are outdoor fibers that shed water and dry in the breeze. The cushions have hydro-draining padding, so rain runs out through them quickly and a sofa left uncovered overnight does not stay soaked.

The seat is low, about 10 5/8 inches to the frame, and the cushion adds another 4 3/8 inches. Dordoni left generous room for loose back cushions, so the sofa can be built up as deep as the owner likes. The three-seater is about 93 inches long, the two-seater about 71 3/4, and the one-seater, which works as a lounge chair, about 41 3/4, all at the same 38 1/4 inch depth.

The two coffee tables stand about 14 7/8 inches high, one square at 31 1/2 inches and one rectangular at 47 1/4 by 31 1/2. Tops are Carrara marble, Luna or Farsena stone, or natural gres. A three-seater, two one-seaters and the larger table make a full outdoor living room for a terrace or a pool house. Spool is made in Italy, and RODA also presents it within its partnership with Missoni.

Rodolfo Dordoni

Rodolfo Dordoni studied architecture at the Milan Polytechnic and has guided RODA's collections as artistic director. With Spool he turned a simple wound frame into a sofa family that can be dressed in almost any color.
