RODA Plein Air dining tables and Batyline chairs
Michael Anastassiades designed RODA Plein Air for eating outside. The family is mostly tables, in long rectangles, a large square and two lower versions, joined by an armchair and a lounge chair in Batyline mesh. The lines are spare and the joints almost vanish. Within RODA patio furniture, this is the collection to study when the table will be the center of the terrace.
Outdoor dining tables
Tables drawn in one line
Anastassiades works in the space between fine art and industrial design, and Plein Air carries that restraint outdoors. Each table stands on a slim aluminum frame. Where the leg meets the frame of the top, the joint is close to invisible, so the outline of the table runs without a break from one foot, across the top and down to the other. Seen from across a lawn, it looks drawn with a single pen stroke.
Tops come in matt gres or wavy glass. Gres is a dense porcelain stoneware that stands up to sun and does not stain easily, offered here in sand, mole and lead. The wavy glass, available on the deeper tables and the square one, has a rippled surface in fern, navy or paprika. Frames are powder coated aluminum in smoke or milk, and aluminum will not rust beside a pool or on a coastal deck.
The longest tables run about 110 inches in two depths, 31 1/2 or 39 3/8 inches. The next size down is about 86 3/4 inches long. A square table of 59 1/8 inches gathers a group around one center, and a 59 1/8 by 31 1/2 inch table suits a smaller balcony. Two low tables, square and rectangular, drop to about 26 3/4 inches for a relaxed meal taken from lounge seating.
The chairs rely on tension. Batyline mesh is stretched across a powder coated stainless steel frame so tightly that the seat seems to hang in the air, and a hydro-draining cushion adds comfort without holding water. The armchair sits at dining height, the lounge chair lower and wider. Both share the smoke or milk frames of the tables. It is Italian outdoor furniture with very few parts, each of them in plain view.

Michael Anastassiades studied civil engineering before industrial design at the Royal College of Art, and his work is held by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Plein Air shows the same economy of material he brings to his lamps and objects.
