RODA Ombrina outdoor gazebo on wheels
Shade that moves with the sun: that is the job of RODA Ombrina, a gazebo drawn by the craftsman and artist Antonino Sciortino. A flat roof of woven belts filters the light, a thin steel frame holds it up, and wheels at the base let it roll to a new spot. Among RODA patio furniture it is the piece that shelters the others.

Ombrina keeps to the essentials. Slender uprights rise to a horizontal roof, and the roof is a lattice of gray polyester belts that breaks the sunlight into stripes on the floor below. There are no solid panels and no heavy beams, so from a short distance the frame almost disappears and the shade seems to hang in the air.
The structure is stainless steel with a powder coat in smoke or milk, a finish that protects the metal through wet winters and hot summers. Nylon wheels at the base make the gazebo easy to reposition by hand: under a tree in July, closer to the house in the fall. Overall it measures about 112 by 119 1/2 inches, with a base near 104 1/2 by 86 3/4 inches and a height of about 80 inches.
Curtains are optional. They come in a white polyester Trevira CS fabric or in a gray acrylic, and they close the sides for privacy from neighbors or turn the gazebo into a small outdoor room for a daybed or a pair of lounge chairs. Without them, Ombrina stays open on all sides and reads as a light shade over a table.
Sciortino works by hand and by instinct, and RODA builds the design in series, a mix of craft thinking and industrial production that the brand points to in this piece. The result is Italian outdoor furniture with a Mediterranean character, sized for a pool deck, a lawn or a rooftop.
