Teak and belt system

The grid that started it

Look at a Network sofa from behind and the idea is plain. The teak frame runs in horizontal bands, with open spaces between them, and the top of the backrest is wide enough to act as a shelf. Dordoni turned the back of the sofa into a place for a drink or a book, so a lounge area needs fewer side tables.

The sofas come as a two-seater about 84 5/8 inches long and a three-seater about 115 inches, plus right, left and central modules for longer runs. A console of the same height can stand behind them. The sofas are about 43 1/4 inches deep and sit low, with a 4 inch cushion over a belt base. The lounge chair and the teak coffee tables, square or rectangular, in two heights, complete the living room.

For dining, Network offers a side chair and an armchair, both with teak frames and a back of woven belts. The bar stool and the counter height stool, with seats near 29 1/2 and 21 5/8 inches, were drawn mainly for restaurants and hotel bars, though they work just as well at a home outdoor kitchen. The belts are 45 millimeters wide, in eight standard colors and five recycled ones.

Solid teak is the reason Network can stay out year after year. It holds up to rain and sun, and if it is left unoiled it settles into a silver gray patina. The belts drain, the hydro-draining cushions shed water, and the whole system is made in Italy by RODA to be mixed piece by piece.

Rodolfo Dordoni

Rodolfo Dordoni came to RODA to design one collection and stayed on as artistic director. Network is that first collection, the one that carried interior design thinking onto the terrace.
