Hand-woven rugs from Erice, the Sicilian village that gave the chair its name, are the source for RODA Erice, an armchair by Luca Pevere. Belts pass through rows of slots cut into an aluminum frame and form blocks of color, much like a textile. One version has bare metal arms, the other has arms wrapped in cord. It adds a craft pattern to RODA patio furniture.

Woven dining armchair

A loom cut from aluminum

The frame works like a loom. A laser cuts a sequence of openings in the aluminum, and flat belts about 1 3/4 inches wide are threaded through them by hand to make the seat and back. The belts act as the weft and the metal as the warp. Since the openings sit at different depths from the eye, the pattern shifts as you walk past.

The structure is powder coated aluminum in smoke or milk. Aluminum does not rust and the powder coat guards the surface, so Erice can sit beside a pool or near the coast all season. Belts come in polyester or acrylic in eight colors, tobacco and olive among them, or in five recycled colors such as clay and teal. Open belts drain, and the seat cushion is hydro-draining.

Erice 011 adds thin cord wound around the arms, in the same palette as the belts, for a softer touch under the forearm. Both versions share one size: about 23 1/4 inches wide and 22 1/2 inches deep, with the seat 19 inches high on its cushion and arms at 26 inches. Those numbers suit a standard dining table.

Pevere wanted the chair to carry a memory of hand weaving into an industrial object. The cord and the cushion warm up the metal, and the belt colors decide the character. One color around a long table looks orderly; several mixed look closer to the rugs that started it. Erice is Italian outdoor furniture with a graphic streak.
