RODA Filet woven garden screen in iroko
RODA Filet is a freestanding screen created with UnPIZZO, a studio that works in woven design. An iroko outer frame holds an aluminum grid, and belts in one or two colors are laid over the grid by hand into a raised lattice. Light and air still pass. It gives RODA garden furniture a way to divide a terrace without walling it in.

Lace, scaled up for a garden
UnPIZZO grew out of a study of bobbin lace from Cantu and the towns of Brianza in the Como area, and Filet carries that textile thinking outdoors. Belts in a narrow and a wide gauge overlap across the metal, which builds depth. Some areas close up solid, others stay open, and the shadows they cast travel across the paving as the sun moves.
The outer frame is natural iroko, a hardwood that stands up to weather and grays slowly if left untreated. The inner grid is powder coated aluminum in smoke, and the feet are powder coated stainless steel, which keeps each panel steady on decking or stone. Belts come in polyester or acrylic in eight colors, from sand to orange, or in five recycled colors such as mint and rose.
Filet comes in two formats. The vertical panel is about 48 1/2 inches wide and 75 5/8 inches tall; the horizontal one is the same panel on its side. Both are 14 1/8 inches deep, a small footprint. A connection kit aligns several panels in a row, so Filet can run along a dining area or screen a pool from the house.
Two belt colors produce a checked, three-dimensional surface. A single color reads quieter and more architectural. Either way, each panel is woven by hand, so the screen carries the look of craft work into a garden. Filet is Italian outdoor furniture of an unusual kind: a partition that also works as a piece of textile art.
