RODA Dandy modular outdoor sofa and chaise longue
RODA Dandy is a modular sofa by Rodolfo Dordoni that looks and sits like an upholstered living room piece, then stays outside all year. Three seat modules, four backrest lengths and one armrest combine into straight sofas or an L shape with a chaise longue. Every surface is covered in fabric. Of all RODA outdoor furniture, this is the collection that comes closest to an indoor sofa.

Think of Dandy as a kit. The seat comes in three sizes: a three-seater module about 88 5/8 inches long, a two-seater at 59 inches, and a chaise longue module that runs 51 1/4 inches deep. Backrests in four lengths and a low armrest go on top. RODA also sells ready combinations built from these parts, the longest a three-seater sofa just under 106 inches, while the loose parts can be arranged to follow a wall or wrap a corner.
Under the cloth sits an aluminum frame strung with elastic straps. Aluminum does not rust, which counts on a terrace that gets rain or sea air. The padding layers three kinds of polyurethane inside a 3D net, and the seat cushions are hydro-draining, so water runs through and the foam dries quickly. Each cover fastens to the frame with Velcro strips and comes off for washing, or for storage when winter arrives.
Without a backrest, any seat module doubles as a big pouf. That helps in a lounge that needs seating facing two ways, around a fire pit or in the middle of a pool deck. Add a backrest later and the pouf turns back into a sofa. The seat is low, at 14 1/8 inches, with arms at 17 3/8 inches, so the whole composition keeps a flat, calm profile.
Dordoni kept the frame light and the lines strict, which leaves the fabric to set the mood. Covers come in twenty RODA fabrics, among them Oxford, Loom and Riva, and the company also works with Missoni on outdoor textiles. The result is Italian outdoor furniture that moves easily between a private garden and a hotel lounge.

Rodolfo Dordoni
Rodolfo Dordoni, the Milan architect who began working with RODA in 2005 and later became its artistic director, built Dandy around the idea he has pushed at the company from the start: indoor comfort, made for the outdoors.
