RODA Mamba modular outdoor sofa system
RODA Mamba is a modular sofa by Rodolfo Dordoni built from straight seats and five-sided corner seats. Backrests attach to whichever edges face the room, so a layout can turn at an open angle or run on in a long, bending line. Few pieces of RODA furniture adapt so readily to an odd-shaped terrace or a deck with no square corners.

The system has six parts. Two straight seats, a two-seater about 63 inches long and a three-seater about 94 1/2 inches, do the long runs. Two pentagonal seats, one right and one left, turn the corner, and each is about 78 inches long. Backrests come in two lengths, roughly 31 1/2 and 52 3/4 inches. The short one fits any edge of any seat, while the long one belongs on the one side of the pentagon cut to take it.
Dordoni wanted the sofa to look as if it hovered. The seats sit on small cylindrical feet that are hard to spot, and the backrests lean back slightly to open the angle with the seat. That lean invites a slouch, and the low seat base, about 13 3/8 inches high, adds to it. Guests end up with their feet out and a cushion under one arm.
Under the upholstery is a powder coated aluminum frame in RODA's smoke finish. A pool deck or a salty coastal breeze is no threat to it, since aluminum cannot rust. The padding is hydro-draining polyurethane in layers of different density, so water passes through and the seat recovers after rain. The fabric covers fasten with Velcro strips and come off for cleaning.
A pentagon and a three-seater make a wide corner sofa for a family terrace. Two pentagons back to back give a free-standing island in the middle of a deck. Mamba is Italian outdoor furniture made to order, so the layout can be drawn first and the pieces counted after. A floor plan with rough measurements is enough to start.
