RODA Barrique woven wood outdoor planters
RODA Barrique borrows the shape of a wine barrel and dresses it in lacework. Iroko slats form a round planter, flat belts run around the outside, and thin cord crosses over them in a diamond net. The weaving studio UnPIZZO designed it. Next to a sofa or a dining table it is a small object, yet it carries more handwork than most RODA furniture.

There are three sizes, from about 16 inches across and 18 inches tall up to roughly 31 inches across and 25 inches tall. Each size comes twice, once with narrow slats and once with wide ones. The narrow version reads finer and closer to a textile; the wide one shows more of the wood. Being round, they sit well in pairs at a front door, spaced along a terrace edge or clustered in a group of different heights.
The wood is iroko, a dense hardwood often chosen for outdoor work. Over it go 45 mm belts and 3 mm cord in polyester or acrylic, picked from RODA's full color range, including a recycled line in stone, clay, mint, teal and rose. Belts and cord can match for a solid look, sit tone on tone, or contrast in two colors. Left unoiled, iroko slowly turns gray outdoors, which softens the wood against the colored weave.
UnPIZZO was founded by Agnese Selva and Bettina Colombo to rethink the traditional bobbin lace of Brianza, north of Milan. On Barrique that interest becomes a working surface. The belts form the weave, the cord draws rhombuses over the whole cylinder, and structure and decoration end up as one thing, with the wood taking on a role it rarely has in a planter.
Barrique is meant to live near RODA sofas and tables and pick up their belt and cord colors, so a planter can echo the seating a few feet away. It is made in Italy with visible handwork. The mix of sizes, slat width and colors is settled with the quote, and a group of three sizes in one color is a simple place to start.

UnPIZZO
UnPIZZO, the small Brianza workshop of Agnese Selva and Bettina Colombo, studies traditional weaving and lace, and in Barrique it turned that research into the skin of a garden planter.
