RODA Arena daybed for garden and pool
RODA Arena is a single piece: an oval daybed by Gordon Guillaumier that sits somewhere between a sun lounger and a low sofa. It is wide enough to stretch out on and deep enough to curl up in with a book, and it gives a pool deck or a garden lounge a relaxed, informal seat. Among RODA outdoor furniture it has no companion pieces, so it is chosen on its own.
Outdoor lounge daybed
One seat, many postures
Arena is about 80 inches long and 66 inches deep, with a backrest that leans back at an easy angle and an elliptical outline that wraps around the person lying on it. Guillaumier wanted a hybrid: somewhere to sunbathe in the afternoon, read after lunch, or sit up and talk over a drink. The seat is about 19 inches off the ground, higher than most flat loungers, so getting up again takes little effort.
The frame is stainless steel, powder coated in smoke. Stretched across it are padded belts that carry the cushions, either polyester in gray-sand or gray-blue, or a recycled acrylic version in clay or stone. Belts and hydro-draining cushions both let rain pass straight through, so after a summer storm the daybed dries quickly and the padding does not stay soaked. The powder coat protects the steel from sun and pool splashes.
Softness is the whole idea. The cushions are covered in a tubular knit fabric, and RODA lists a long catalog of upholstery for Arena, from plain weaves such as Oxford and Shore to patterned designs. The product sheet also presents Arena within RODA's partnership with Missoni, the Italian textile house, which brings pattern and fabric work to RODA seating. The cover you pick changes the character of the daybed more than anything else.
Arena needs a little room around it: the end of a pool, a stretch of lawn, the corner of a large terrace lounge. One daybed can anchor a space by itself, and two side by side make a sunbathing spot for a couple. It is Italian outdoor furniture built by RODA near Lake Varese, made to order in the belt color and cushion fabric settled with the quote.
An oval daybed deep enough to read in.
